It's estimated 90 percent of the waste in our waters is plastic and even little pieces of it, like straws, can be deadly to sea creatures. According to researchers, 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year.
As a result, plastic straws will no longer be sold on the island of Sanibel. The ordinance was approved unanimously on Monday, September 10, 2018. Sanibel joins other Southwest Florida communities of Marco Island and Fort Myers Beach in banning the distribution of plastic straws.
There will be penalties for anyone breaking the law. It’ll start with a warning but after that, people could face fines of up to $500.
